Dr. Saumyadipta Pyne joined as Professor of Public Health Foundation of India at the Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad, in September 2015. Formerly, he held the prestigious PC Mahalanobis Chair while being Professor and Head of Bioinformatics, in CR Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. He is also Remote Research Associate of Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University. Prof. Pyne is Ramalingaswami Fellow of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and a former senior research fellow of the Indian Statistical Institute. He received his doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in USA working simultaneously in the Departments of Computer Science, and Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. He conducted his postdoctoral research in Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., USA, and then worked at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School. Prof. Pyne is a known international expert in areas of Big Data in Life Sciences and Health Informatics, Computational Statistics and High-dimensional Data Modeling. He is Member of the Program Development and Advisory Committee of the Big Data Initiative (BDI) of DST.
Prof. Pyne is also the founder Convener and Chairman of the Computer Society of India's Special Interest Group on Big Data Analytics (CSI SIG-BDA) and promotes Big Data research in India and abroad. He taught one of the earliest Mater's courses in the country on Big Data Analytics at the University of Hyderabad. He co-Chaired the 2nd and 3rd IEEE Big Data workshops, the world's largest such workshops, in 2014 & 2015 in Silicon Valley and Washington DC respectively. He was the Program Chair for the 7th Workshop on Big Data Benchmarking 2015 co-organized with UCSD, and the IEEE International Workshop on Foundations of Big Data Computing 2015 & 2016 co-organized with HiPC in India. Prof. Pyne also organized in Hyderabad the National Workshop in Big Data Analytics (BiDA) in 2014 and the DST-BDI Workshop on Curricula Design for Big Data (CDBD) in 2015. The chapter, "Big Data in Health Sciences and Epidemiology", by S. Pyne, et al., was published in the Elsevier 'Handbook of Statistics' in 2015. In 2016, Springer will publish the text, 'Big Data Analytics: Methods and Applications' edited by S. Pyne, et al.
